Make Geodesic Dome Greenhouse

Large or Small Making A Geodesic Dome Greenhouse
Is A Great DIY Project For Any Gardener

When you make geodesic dome greenhouses it's much like building any other building.  Work begins at ground level moving up and then from the outside in.

The first thing you will need to do is prepare the site and you'll finish with completing the inside details of your geodesic dome greenhouse.

Coming up with a design, blueprint or plan is essential to the success of this or any diy project.  If you just grab some lumber and start building you are simply asking for disaster.  Especially if you want to make a geodesic dome.

Most folks cold cobble together something vaguely house shaped (though it's advised you use greenhouse plans for even the simplest structure to make sure you get the results you are looking for)  but a geodesic sphere or "bucky ball" as they are sometimes called is something else entirely.

To make geodesic dome greenhouses you really need a good set of plans to follow.  That's not to say this is a hard project, not by any means.  But it does require precision and attention to detail.  So get yourself a set of plans from someone who's already built one and you'll be way ahead of the game.

Ok, so once your design is finalized you'll need to go get any building permits your local government may require.  Most places do not require building permits for "portable structures" and many geodesic greenhouses are quite portable making them easy, inexpensive and hassle free to build.

With permits in hand (if needed) it's time to go shopping.

There's two schools of thought here.  Get everything at once before you begin building.  This saves you time an could save you money because you often can get a better price when buying in bulk.

Also, running out of something half way thru a project is a hassle.  Especially if the thing you need has to be ordered.  This will add up to a huge delay and extra expense if you hired help to assist with your construction efforts.

The second method of gathering greenhouse building supplies is to keep your eyes open for sales and free materials over a season or two.  If you are not in a hurry this can really save you a bundle of cash.

In any case, your first task when you make geodesic dome greenhouses, or any kind of greenhouse, will be to prepare the site.

Whether you are putting in a foundation for a permanent structure or building a portable greenhouse you'll need to level the ground where you plan to build.  Be sure to consider drainage issues and access to utilities such as water and electric when deciding where to position your greenhouse.

It goes without saying that it's faster and less expensive to position your new geodesic dome near existing utilities such as those already existing in a garage rather than having to hire an electrician or plumber to run new lines and pipes.

If you plan to have a concrete floor, be sure to have it poured well before you plan to erect the walls so it has plenty of time to cure.  Once your site is ready and your floor (dirt or other) is in place you're ready to make geodesic dome greenhouse!

So you want to build a geodesic dome greenhouse!
Building geodesic greenhouses can be a very fun and satisfying thing to do.

It can also be an exercise in frustration if you don't think it thru and use a good set of plans.

If you are a DIY kind of person you will undoubtedly find that building a greenhouse is far cheaper than even buying a prefabricated one.  For starters you can use inexpensive standard-sized biding materials and let's face it, your labor is free.

When you do it yourself you get to make your greenhouse any size you want.  You are not stuck with the predetermined "standard sizes" manufacturers churn out.  Innovative designs and experimenting with materials is the order of the day instead of being stuck with a one size fits all geodesic greenhouse kit.

Heck you can even customize the interior space and accessories like your greenhouse benches to suit yourself exactly.  For example if you are only 5 ft tall it may be more comfortable and easier for you to work if you lower the greenhouse bench height by a few inches.

Geodesic greenhouses can make a wonderful winter retreat.  Putting a deck in the middle of your dome can make it double as tropical winter hideaway right in your own back yard.  You don't have this luxury with greenhouse kits and off the shelf items.

Now, as good as all this is sounding remember it's not all going to be a bed of roses.  At least not at first.

In this day and age, time is money and though your labor is free, how much time do you have to devote to building your bio-dome?   Also, depending on the size and type of geodesic greenhouses you plan to build, you may need other skills.  Skills such as plumbing and running electricity.  These are things that are best left to professionals, in my humble opinion.

If you plan to build your dome on a foundation or slab, you'll probably need a building permit.  Check with the coding in your area and follow the procedures required by your local building office.

If however, you plan to make a "portable greenhouse."  One that can be moved from spot to spot as desired none of the above applies to you.  This is one of the great things about building a geodesic dome greenhouse.  The inherent strength of the structure allows even some very large ones to be moved with relative ease and without damage to the structure.

Experienced do-it-yourselfers and folks who are good with geometry could probably puzzle out how to build the dome itself.  But you'll have to be precise in your work and hope you get it right the first time or you'll waste a lot of effort and cash.  And that's just the structure not information on how to turn them into functioning geodesic greenhouses.

My advice is to get yourself a good set of geodesic dome greenhouse plans from someone who's been-there, done-that.
