Geodesic Dome Greenhouse Farming... The Right Plant Containers Are Vital To Your Success!

A majority of geodesic dome greenhouse farmers work with either plastic-type or clay planting containers. Each tend to be prefer to economical as well as will do the trick.

Nevertheless, there are a number of variations between the two, therefore you need to learn how each kind of pot performs before selecting which you would prefer to garden with.

A Few Basic Things For Your Dome Greenhouse...

Flower pots employed in a geodesic greenhouse need to have the water drainage opening at the bottom of the pot. A number of plants and flowers actually develop far better in one style of vessel verses another.

So know about your specific plants as well as flowers requirements. Pots should be cleansed and sanitized in between uses. To accomplish this you’ll wash the interior with a combination of bleach coupled with water and then you can leave the containers out in the sun for a few days so that you can get rid of any kind of fungus spores that will hide inside little openings.

For those who have trouble with slugs, snails or worms as part of your geodesic dome greenhouse here’s some advice for you. Set a tiny piece of very fine mesh or wire screening covering the drainage hole in the bottom of your container. That prevents these pests from creeping up in to the vessel out of the underside . It’ll also assist with drainage!

Clay Planting pots For Your Geodesic Greenhouse

Clay planting containers are usually most commonly used container of each gardener. Clay pots will always be popular as well as come in countless styles and also sizes. They tend to be porous which enables them to take up moisture and let air to pass thru the containers sides. It’s hard to over-water the plants as well as flowers in clay growing pots.

On the other hand given that they are usually porous if you over feed, the extra salts can show up as a whitened crust around the edges of the plant containers. Should you have lots of sodium within your water the pot can work as a filter too and they will also show up as a crusting along the side of your container. Mold might also form around the container in a damp greenhouse. These particular salts as well as mold really should be scrubbed off to keep your vessel porous.

One last point about clay planting containers. They tend to be hefty whenever plants are put into them. Several hundred plants as well as flowers in clay growing pots could be too heavy for the greenhouse bench.

Plastic Seedling Pots For Your Greenhouse...

A growing number of greenhouse gardeners tend to be utilizing plastic planting containers since they are generally effortless to clean, light in weight even though planted and watered. And in addition these come in a large range of colors, styles and also sizes.

As opposed to clay plastic-type pots tend to be nonporous that may lead to over-watering. Which means that you will have to be a lot more vigilant while irrigating if you select plastic-type rather than clay because they do not absorb any of the extra moisture. Additionally, they don’t allow for air to flow through the sides consequently somewhat larger planting pots may be required to allow the roots to prosper.

On the upside, because they're nonporous ensures that they will store moisture in significantly better and you’ll have to water less. Plastic pots also won’t collect sodium crusts or mold the way clay will. This means lots less labor for you.

Knowledge is power with regards to year long cultivating within your geodesic dome greenhouse. Decide on your planting containers wisely and you’ll be enjoying fresh foods from your garden throughout the year. Happy Farming!

Harvesting food out of your geodesic dome greenhouse year long may be much more than a dream. With a little preparation many veggies may grow, thrive and produce within a greenhouse all year round.

One important consideration is without a doubt exactly how much room you have. If it's limited think about growing cherry tomatoes, tom thumb lettuce along with other small-space vegetables.

Then again if you have designed a substantial dome greenhouse you can cultivate regular size tomatoes, green beans along with other veggies.

The secret is without a doubt putting together the greenhouse properly for the type of vegetables you wish to grow. That is... setting up the type of climate inside that your plants and flowers will thrive in out-of-doors.

Inside a cooler greenhouse you'll be able to cultivate lettuce, radishes, kale, cabbage, herbs as well as other cold temperature vegetables. This style of greenhouse is definitely the most cost effective to run since it requires negligible auxiliary heating. In a lot of regions a good thermal mass temperature maintenance system may be sufficient. However during the summer time you are going to need a cooling system. Correct air flow along with a fan ought to do the trick.

If you would like raise tomatoes, cucumbers, red and green peppers, peas, cantaloup etc you should create a warm greenhouse. Depending on the place you live this may mean you'll have to buy heater for your geodesic dome greenhouse. Never worry... this isn't as pricey as heating your dwelling simply because the sun's heat is going to do most of the work but you cannot allow your plants freeze overnight and it will have to get quite warm during the day for them to thrive.

No Matter What Vegetables You Raise In Your Dome Greenhouse...

There are many things you will want to understand. Many vegetables, in particular vines, need lots of room. One way to deal with this is to teach the vines to grow up posts or perhaps work with an inverted planter allowing the vines to trail right down to the ground. Both of those are actually substantial space saving methodologies for both inside and outside your greenhouse.

Bare in mind it is important to offer the correct quantity of room for the flowers to mature. Veggies grow the best in elevated boxes built on the floor of your dome greenhouse. Red-wood or maybe cedar frames full of a light-weight planting mix is effective.

Much like open-air gardening, when the plants mature you will have to supply support for them. You could also want to hand-pollinate the vegetables that have flowers since your greenhouse will most likely not have the insect population to help get the task done.

A Few Simple Methods To Pollinate Crops In Your Dome Greenhouse ...

1. Use a little paintbrush (artisan type not one for painting your house) on every one of the floral groupings to transport the pollen from flower to flower.

2. Gently shake each plant (when it is in a container it is easy to cautiously pick it up and position it above the other plants of the same type when you do this)

3. Use a fan

Getting aggressive at distinguishing trouble is is even more crucial in your greenhouse compared to in your backyard garden. Pay attention to the plants and flowers for any kind of sign of trouble. Take action at the initial indication of infestations as well as sicknesses. When you should find an infested flower, apply the plant using the proper solution to do away with it and to to help keep the situation under control. When plants start to diminish, take them out. Fragile or feeble annual plants just invite trouble.

Maintaining a nonstop cycle of veggies growing throughout every season can be done so long as you plant replacement seeds regularly. As soon as you remove old, spent or diseased plants you should have new seedlings to replenish them.

And so as you are creating and building your own geodesic dome greenhouse you'll want to give consideration to exactly what veggies and other plants you are planning to grow within it. So you'll build in the functions you'll need in order to correctly raise food for your household throughout the year.

Finding the very best area for your own dome green house is simple. As a result of it's spherical design it won't possess a long as well as shorter section or even a "peak" to think about. Obviously you should shouldn't put it where a house or big tree will shade it. So only place it inside a bright place and you are ready to go.

You need to give some thought to where to place or place your vegetables within your garden greenhouse.

You don't want bigger plants shading the smaller types consequently smaller sized vegetation to the outside taller ones in close. Also, keep in mind you can use inverted plant containers for vining vegetation, thus saving bench and space on the floor.

Another thing to consider getting in your geodesic dome greenhouse is a big water tank. That makes sprinkling easier as well as moderates temps inside by simply taking in the warmth in the daytime and letting it go at night. Any 30-50 gallon garbage can filled with normal water helps with this.

Be sure you work with good quality planting medium to get the best results from your green house garden. To the beginner  greenhouse gardener or pot gardener this will likely look like a pointless expense. They may use soil from their outside vegetable garden as an alternative. This typically causes poor outcomes as it compresses inside planting pots too much and does not preserve humidity in the pots in between waterings.

Getting a jump on the planting season is one of the reasons to create your own green house. Though it is possible to cultivate vegetables year round in the geodesic dome and you'll enjoy that as well. Highest yield and minimal bother could be the goal geodesic dome greenhouse gardeners.

I mean who wants to work harder than they have to?  No matter if you are wanting to grow tropical plants, starts for your flower or vegetable garden or even year round edible crops.

Working in your weather conditions, the room you've got as well as plants and flowers indigenous to your neighborhood are the best ways to get the most from your garden and greenhouse while using the smallest amount of effort.

One... Be discriminating in regards to the crops you decide on. Be sure to choose kinds that do nicely in the kind of soil you've got at your area. Though it's correct that you will end up making use of potting soils within your geodesic greenhouse all of the flowers still have to transition nicely into the backyard garden outdoors. Therefore should your soil is sandy make sure the flowers you want to cultivate can flourish in that kind of situation or you will wind up having to do a great deal of work to change your dirt where you intend to place them.

Two... Pick drought resistant flowers. Veggies and flowers that require much less water will do much better in uncertain environments, crops like this mean much less work for you. Let's face the facts, if you need to quit your work several times a day to go water the plants inside your greenhouse it can be a drag. Vegetation that happen to be content with 1 long watering per day definitely will prosper and you'll have plenty of time have fun with other activities you love.

Three... Plant with the times of the year never in opposition to them. Yes, it is possible to raise fruit and vegetables along with flowers year-round inside of a geodesic dome greenhouse but it really will come as no real shock it truly is much easier to cultivate plants and flowers in their best growing seasons versus outside them. In case your target is largest production for lowest amount of work then staying with the seasons is the better choice for you. There are plenty of plants you can cultivate to keep you growing plants year long.

Four... Grow crops native to your neighborhood. This might appear to be a obvious but some individuals get so enthusiastic whilst at the nursery or when selecting seeds that they do not think about the origin of the flowers they are getting. Local flowers, vegetables and fruits are easiest to care for because they're absolutely suited to the climate in your area. That will mean Less work for you.

Five... Another thing to take into account when scouting for plants is what the pests and wildlife in your town like to feed on. When you are trying to raise their favorite main course it'll be more complicated to keep them out of your garden (in fact it usually is impossible) compared with if you planted crops less attractive to them.

When choosing flowers to raise in ones own geodesic dome greenhouse and eventually your own garden you will lessen your work load plus maximize your harvest through choosing to cultivate only plants and flowers that could prosper inside your unique location. Plus, you'll save money by using significantly less eco-friendly fertilizer, less water as well as insect killers.

Using The Right Soil In Your Geodesic Dome Greenhouse

Your Dome Greenhouse Plans Will Show You How To
Build & Run Your Biodome Greenhouse Successfully

The majority of geodesic dome greenhouse backyard gardeners cultivate his or her vegetables inside pots. These may be easily moved about and also maintained on an individual basis.

Gardening in this way takes a large amount of light weight potting soil. That being said we have to investigate the methods you will get the quantity you require without having to break the bank.

Commercial packed planting garden soil can be bought at all yard stores not to mention plant centers. The packages come in a number of sizes. Buying large quantities gets you less expensive per unit rates so the more substantial the container the less the expense per quart of garden soil.

Some store owners may even provide you with a cost break for buying multiple bags at one time. Or when buying online provide free shipping if you buy at least a certain amount.

So ask if the store has a quantity markdown offered. Shops do not always publicize these kind of value reductions thus it’s definitely worth your time and effort to inquire about.

Many home gardeners would rather put together their own potting recipes. These folks really feel this can be less expensive, easy and flexible. It lets them combine the garden soil differently over a plant by plant basis so that they will satisfy the individual wants of the plants they may be raising.

A good potting soil ought to contain plenty of nutrients for healthy plant development. It should be easy for roots to be able to press thru and it will need to drain effectively while holding onto adequate moisture to keep the plant from wilting.

A common fundamental blend includes 2 parts very good soil, one part sand and another part peat moss or even compost. Bone meal is often put in for a eco-friendly fertilizer.

If you wish to grow plant life that prefer a far more acidic soil like azaleas or camellias, boost the organic matter (peat moss, leaf mold, well ground bark or perhaps garden compost) to Fifty percent or even more.

Under no circumstances put clay in a container blend because it’s too heavy and may prevent plant's roots from growing correctly.

In order to create your own potting soil but are worried about relocating diseases, insect eggs or larvae into your geodesic dome greenhouse along with your dirt from the garden you should look at coming up with a soilless mix.

Do that through the use of fine sand, Perlite or vermiculite mixed with peat moss, sawdust or ground bark. Make sure you include plant food.

This specific planting combination offers excellent air diffusion (allows air to circulate round the plant roots) and drainage. This mix also holds moisture properly. And you can be sure the components are free of soil-borne bugs or illnesses. Even so, because fluids does run thru it swiftly you will want to fertilize the plant life on a regular basis and water cautiously.

Constructing a geodesic dome greenhouse and also working within it all year round is among the most satisfying things a garden enthusiast can do for themselves as well as their loved ones.

Geodesic Sphere Greenhouse Has Many Working Parts!

Building A Strong Geodesic Dome Greenhouse
Makes Biodome Gardening Success Easy!
Download YOUR Plans Here
If you're building a geodesic sphere greenhouse or any other type you need to understand there's more to successfully growing plants year round than slapping up the structure.

Those who fail to understand this are doomed to fail and often blame the greenhouse itself for their failed crops.

Two things will determine what kind and how much equipment you'll need to create the proper environment inside your greenhouse for growing plants.

The climate outdoors and the climate you want to set up and maintain inside your greenhouse.  The climate you establish inside your greenhouse will dictate what kinds of plants you can grow inside it.

The climate controls you provide will determine the effectiveness of your greenhouse. Therefore, it's important to get the best equipment you can possibly afford.  Each of your purchases should have the ability to handle the needs of your particular greenhouse.

Since you have absolutely no control over the climate in your area, it's best to "Know Your Enemy", as the saying goes.  The harsher and more severe the climate where you live, the more you'll need to alter or augment the climate inside your greenhouse.  That could mean heating, cooling, humidifying, lighting and venting.  The more you need to add the higher the cost of operation.

Finding greenhouse equipment is easier than ever.  Amazon has a good selection as do other online sources.  Your local garden shop or home center will have some options for you as well.  Do your homework to get the best deal on the greenhouse equipment you need for your geodesic sphere greenhouse.

Be sure to speak with the folks you trust at your local garden center.  They will be intimately familiar with your climate's problems and should be able to advise you on what sort of things you'll need for the type of plants you plan to grow to thrive.

Just be sure you understand that most successful geodesic sphere greenhouses include some sort of heating system, cooling system and ventilation system.  There are very few climates where these basic systems are not needed, at least once in a while.

Other systems you may want to consider are...  a way to regulate and supplement humidity, automatic watering and fertilizing as well as artificial lighting.  By carefully selecting the systems you want or need you will insure your geodesic sphere greenhouse will provide you an optimum growing space for your crops with a minimum effort and expenditure on your part.

Geodesic Structures... Greenhouse Flooring!

The Floor Of Your Geodesic Dome Greenhouse
Needs To Be Both Functional & Pretty!
Download YOUR Plans Here
The floor for your greenhouse or other geodesic structures needs to be both functional and aesthetic.  It is the surface you walk on and it completes the image of your garden structure.

Natural materials like stone or brick are the choice of many greenhouse owners because they just seem to go along with plants and gardening.

Your walkway and the area beneath your greenhouse benches should be of two different materials.  The walk way needs to stand up to lots of foot traffic so it will need to be something firm, durable and non-skid.  Additionally it should be easy to clean and withstand constant moisture and dirt.  Common materials for greenhouse walkways are concrete, brick, concrete blocks, stone, gravel, wood slats & ground bark (bark chips).

The area beneath the benches is often covered with a porous material that can be kept wet to help keep humidity levels optimal.  some gardeners even like to leave the soil exposed under their greenhouse benches so they've got a little extra growing space.  Common materials for under bench areas are gravel, sawdust, ground bark or any other porous material.

Always check with your local building codes but do your best to avoid a solid concrete slab as flooring for your your geodesic dome greenhouse because it eliminates any natural growing space under benches, increases costs dramatically and doesn't help with humidity.

Most of the flooring choices recommended above for geodesic structures like greenhouses are easy to install yourself.  They are also readily available from building supply and gardening stores in your area.

Concrete... Concrete is very durable and relatively inexpensive flooring choice.  It must e poured during the construction stage so it will have time to "cure" or set up properly before any weight is placed on it.  On the down side, it can stain badly from constant water, fertilizer and algae build up.  Otherwise it's easy to clean and maintain.  It is considered by some to be less attractive than other more natural materials and it can be hard on your joints if you are standing on it day in and day out.

Brick... New or used brick makes a very attractive floor for a bio dome greenhouse.  It can be arranged in many patters and comes in a large variety of shapes and colors.  It's hard yet non-slip.  A brick walkway should be set in sand within a wooden framework to keep all the bricks in shape during years of use.  They are a bit on the pricey side but they are versatile, can be installed after your geodesic structure is erected and are slightly pros helping a little with humidity levels.

Concrete Blocks...  Similar to bricks, concrete blocks are sturdy and fairly easy to install.  They are sturdy and porous so will help with humidity levels when dampened.  They do however, allow algae to grow in the air spaces making them difficult to clean.  Less expensive and also less options for size and style than bricks.

Stone... Geodesic structures with a stone walk way will make a stunning greenhouse.  Sadly, it can add hugely to the expense if you have to buy the stone.  If you collect your own stone be sure to use only those with a flat surface for walking on so you don't trip.  Stone walkways will need cleaning, just as concrete and bricks will, to keep them free of algae.

Wood Slats... Though often seen in greenhouse kits.  It's not recommended you make a greenhouse walkway from wooden slats.  They become slick when wet, easily grow algae making them even more slippery and will need constant treatment to protect them from moisture an distinct damage.  The only up to a wood slat floor is it's inexpensive and easy to install.  If you do so, plan to get some gripping mats to secure your footing.

Gravel... Gravel walkways are super easy to install.  They are functional and like wood, very economical.  Gravel walkways can be wet down to provide humidity.  The drawback is since it's not a solid surface you will need to rake it occasionally to keep the walkway level and stable.  Also, it's more difficult to keep clean than concrete or brick and will need more hosing down which could encourage algae and moss growth.

Gravel is an excellent choice for under your benches.  It will help provide moisture, prevent weeds from growing and can easily be removed later if you want to add extra growing space.

Ground Bark... Very natural, inexpensive and easy to install ground bark is used frequently in greenhouses.  It will need to be raked into place often because, like gravel, it isn't a solid surface.  Unlike gravel it will eventually need to be replaced as it will deteriorate with time.

For under your benches it's a very good choice because it holds moisture well and discourages weeds.  Just like gravel it can easily be  removed when you want more growing space.

Sawdust... VERY inexpensive but best used in under-bench areas of your greenhouse.  Extremely porous it ill hold a lot of moisture for greenhouses that need a lot of humidity.  A very good mulch, sawdust will keep weed growth to a minimum.  It will eventually decompose and can be worked into the soil either inside your greenhouse our in your garden.

There you have the most popular flooring choices for geodesic structures like greenhouses.  Take the time to plan out your project before purchasing materials so you'll save money and get the geodesic dome greenhouse you've always dreamed of!

Building Geodesic Domes... Greenhouses & Glazes

Your Dome Greenhouse Plans Will Help
You Pick The Right Glazing For Your Biodome
Download YOUR Plans Here
Building geodesic domes for greenhouses isn't just about the frame!  What you use to cover your bio dome is the key to the environment you wish to create.

What you need is a covering that's transparent or translucent enough to allow optimum light to shine into your greenhouse.

Since different plants have vastly different light needs, the kinds of plants you want to grow should be taken into consideration when building your geodesic dome.

Things to think about besides the needs of your plants are your climate, the cost of materials and the durability of the material.  Be sure to consider all options for your particular situation to come up with the right solution for your individual needs.

Glass, rigid plastic and soft plastic are the most commonly used "glazes" or coverings for greenhouses.  Let's take a look at each...

Glass...  Glass is the traditional material used to inclose a greenhouse.  It is the standard by which all other materials are measured.  It is transparent and admits the maximum available light.  So much in fact, it may require shading during the summer.  Glass is durable but breaks easily compared to the other options.  If hail, heavy storms or a ball park is near your home, a glass roof could be a problem.

Glass works best when covering rigid and square type greenhouses.  It's difficult to work with when building geodesic domes.  If you want your geodesic greenhouse covered in glass I recommend you have it done by a professional.

Rigid Plastic...  Rigid plastic such as fiberglass is a popular glass-like covering for greenhouses.  It's easier to cut than real glass and much less breakable.  Not as much light shines thru fiberglass but it's still sufficient for most plants.  Also note... the light that comes thru is changed slightly so NO DIRECT SUNLIGHT will shine on your plants.

Fiberglass or other rigid plastic is a good choice for building geodesic domes if you are an experienced DIYer.

Soft Plastic.... Polyethylene and Mylar are two of the least expensive soft plastics and are often used as greenhouse coverings.   They are widely available and come in a large selection of sizes and thicknesses.   Usually purchased in rolls they are easy to cut and attach to your geodesic dome.

Soft plastics provide good light transmission but as they tend to yellow with age that may decrease with time.  Though, far less durable than glass or fiberglass they will need to be replaced much more often.  This is offset by the extremely low cost of the material and the ease of installation.

It's flexibility and light weight make soft plastics the covering of choice for portable geodesic dome greenhouses.

Something to consider...  Many people building geodesic domes for greenhouses start out covering them with soft plastics then replace it with something more rigid and permanent when it wears out.

Geodesic Construction... Geodesic Dome Greenhouse Foundations!

Your Dome Greenhouse Plans Will Show You How
To Set Up Your Biodome Foundation Properly
Download YOUR Plans Here
One aspect of geodesic construction you don't want to overlook when you build your own greenhouse is it's foundation.

Everyone laughs at the fool who builds his house on sand.  Even a child playing on the beach knows that's not going to last very long.

But that is exactly what many folks do when they build a geodesic dome greenhouse without considering their foundation.

Now, it is true that geodesic construction allows you to enclose the most space with the least amount of building materials and a geodesic dome is the lightest structures you can build.

Because of this many geodesic dome greenhouses are designed to be portable and don't really need a foundation.  If yours is like this then the rest of this article will simply help you understand what you'll need to do when you build a bigger greenhouse.  And don't we all dream of having a bigger greenhouse?

Many DIYers get a little nervous when they hear the word "foundation" but it doesn't need to be a scary thing.  In fact, as noted above,  many geodesic greenhouses don't require one or at least not a complete foundation of concrete or brick.  All you many need are footings or posts to anchor your structure.

So... Just What Exactly Is A Foundation
And Why Do You Need One?

A foundation is usually built below or at ground level and is the base on which your greenhouse rests.  It needs to dip below the frost line.  That way it will keep your structure from shifting and heaving during the freeze thaw cycle.  Typical foundation materials in these areas are concrete, bricks, concrete blocks or stone.

If you live in a milder climate a greenhouse usually only needs a foundation as an anchor to keep the structure in place.  In this case all you may need are footings or posts to anchor your geodesic construction project.  As always, check with your local building authorities for foundation regulations and any stricter requirements that may exist in your area.

Consider your drainage needs when deciding what kind of foundation you want or need for your green house.  Let's face it, in addition to rain running off the outside of your greenhouse you'll have water on the floor inside from watering your plants too.  To get rid of this unwanted water's an important consideration.

If you have a complete foundation, you can dig a trench around the outside for drain tiles or just fill the trench with gravel.  In milder climates where you don't need or want a full foundation, a gravel filled trench can double as a base for your structure and a drainage system.

If you buy a geodesic greenhouse kit odds are it will NOT include any foundation materials.  It should however include recommended specifications for one.  If it does not you will need to contact the manufacturer and request them.

Do You Know The Three Steps To
Simple Dome Greenhouse Construction?

Some greenhouses have foundation walls that extend from ground level part of the way up the walls.  These usually stop at bench level and are more common in colder areas as they help insulate the greenhouse.  The trade off is in growing space.

Obviously if the wall is made of brick no sun is getting in, so the area below the benches can not be used for growing plants.  It can however, be used very effectively for storage or even a large water tank to help regulate heat.

Obviously the weight of this kind of geodesic construction would be much higher than if you built exclusively with wood or pvc.  Therefore it would require a more substantial foundation.  But no matter what kind of geodesic dome greenhouse you plan to build be sure to give it a solid foundation to insure years of gardening fun.

Make Geodesic Dome Greenhouse

Large or Small Making A Geodesic Dome Greenhouse
Is A Great DIY Project For Any Gardener
Download YOUR Plans Here
When you make geodesic dome greenhouses it's much like building any other building.  Work begins at ground level moving up and then from the outside in.

The first thing you will need to do is prepare the site and you'll finish with completing the inside details of your geodesic dome greenhouse.

Coming up with a design, blueprint or plan is essential to the success of this or any diy project.  If you just grab some lumber and start building you are simply asking for disaster.  Especially if you want to make a geodesic dome.

Most folks cold cobble together something vaguely house shaped (though it's advised you use greenhouse plans for even the simplest structure to make sure you get the results you are looking for)  but a geodesic sphere or "bucky ball" as they are sometimes called is something else entirely.

To make geodesic dome greenhouses you really need a good set of plans to follow.  That's not to say this is a hard project, not by any means.  But it does require precision and attention to detail.  So get yourself a set of plans from someone who's already built one and you'll be way ahead of the game.

Ok, so once your design is finalized you'll need to go get any building permits your local government may require.  Most places do not require building permits for "portable structures" and many geodesic greenhouses are quite portable making them easy, inexpensive and hassle free to build.

With permits in hand (if needed) it's time to go shopping.

There's two schools of thought here.  Get everything at once before you begin building.  This saves you time an could save you money because you often can get a better price when buying in bulk.

Also, running out of something half way thru a project is a hassle.  Especially if the thing you need has to be ordered.  This will add up to a huge delay and extra expense if you hired help to assist with your construction efforts.

The second method of gathering greenhouse building supplies is to keep your eyes open for sales and free materials over a season or two.  If you are not in a hurry this can really save you a bundle of cash.

In any case, your first task when you make geodesic dome greenhouses, or any kind of greenhouse, will be to prepare the site.

Whether you are putting in a foundation for a permanent structure or building a portable greenhouse you'll need to level the ground where you plan to build.  Be sure to consider drainage issues and access to utilities such as water and electric when deciding where to position your greenhouse.

It goes without saying that it's faster and less expensive to position your new geodesic dome near existing utilities such as those already existing in a garage rather than having to hire an electrician or plumber to run new lines and pipes.

If you plan to have a concrete floor, be sure to have it poured well before you plan to erect the walls so it has plenty of time to cure.  Once your site is ready and your floor (dirt or other) is in place you're ready to make geodesic dome greenhouse!

How To Build Geodesic Greenhouses

So you want to build a geodesic dome greenhouse!
Building geodesic greenhouses can be a very fun and satisfying thing to do.

It can also be an exercise in frustration if you don't think it thru and use a good set of plans.

If you are a DIY kind of person you will undoubtedly find that building a greenhouse is far cheaper than even buying a prefabricated one.  For starters you can use inexpensive standard-sized biding materials and let's face it, your labor is free.

When you do it yourself you get to make your greenhouse any size you want.  You are not stuck with the predetermined "standard sizes" manufacturers churn out.  Innovative designs and experimenting with materials is the order of the day instead of being stuck with a one size fits all geodesic greenhouse kit.

Heck you can even customize the interior space and accessories like your greenhouse benches to suit yourself exactly.  For example if you are only 5 ft tall it may be more comfortable and easier for you to work if you lower the greenhouse bench height by a few inches.

Geodesic greenhouses can make a wonderful winter retreat.  Putting a deck in the middle of your dome can make it double as tropical winter hideaway right in your own back yard.  You don't have this luxury with greenhouse kits and off the shelf items.

Now, as good as all this is sounding remember it's not all going to be a bed of roses.  At least not at first.

In this day and age, time is money and though your labor is free, how much time do you have to devote to building your bio-dome?   Also, depending on the size and type of geodesic greenhouses you plan to build, you may need other skills.  Skills such as plumbing and running electricity.  These are things that are best left to professionals, in my humble opinion.

If you plan to build your dome on a foundation or slab, you'll probably need a building permit.  Check with the coding in your area and follow the procedures required by your local building office.

If however, you plan to make a "portable greenhouse."  One that can be moved from spot to spot as desired none of the above applies to you.  This is one of the great things about building a geodesic dome greenhouse.  The inherent strength of the structure allows even some very large ones to be moved with relative ease and without damage to the structure.

Experienced do-it-yourselfers and folks who are good with geometry could probably puzzle out how to build the dome itself.  But you'll have to be precise in your work and hope you get it right the first time or you'll waste a lot of effort and cash.  And that's just the structure not information on how to turn them into functioning geodesic greenhouses.

My advice is to get yourself a good set of geodesic dome greenhouse plans from someone who's been-there, done-that.
