What new geodesic dome greenhouse gardeners often don’t know is insect and disease problems are different inside a greenhouse than they are out in the garden or in a field.

So, special care will be required to keep your plants happy and healthy and the bountiful harvest rolling in.

When it comes to keeping your greenhouse disease free, knowledge is power.  So let’s take a look at the top three reasons diseases get started in a greenhouse.

The first difference that can cause disease to run rampant in a small space is that in a greenhouse the same crops are often grown continuously.  This helps any insects or disease infestation to grow out of control.

To mitigate this risk be sure to rotate your crops often.  Changing out your crops will allow any insects, fungus or disease that managed to take root to die out between plantings.  This also allows your soil to replenish itself so you always get the best results from the crops you choose to grow.

The second difference is the temperature in your greenhouse.  Inside you will control your temperature, keeping it within a very narrow range to give your plants the best growth potential possible.  Sadly what is good for the plants is also good for the pests and diseases that beset them.  Providing perfect conditions for them to thrive and spread.

The third difference is the higher moisture content both in the air and in the planting medium.  In a garden or field the moisture or humidity varies greatly from one side of the field to another as well as from one day to the next.  It can easily go from near to wilting to the point of full saturation within a small space or small amount of time.

However, inside your dome greenhouse the moisture in the soil and the humidity in the air is maintained at optimum for the best plant growth.  Just like temperature, what is good for the plants is also good for the pests and diseases that beset them.

Some things you can do to keep disease out of your dome greenhouse are…

Be proactive about weeding.  Keep all weeds and grass out of your greenhouse and be sure to clear at least a three foot wide area around your greenhouse.  This will help keep pests and other unwanted things from gaining entrance to your greenhouse in the first place.

Never bring plants from a nursery into your dome if you can help it.  You do not have control over these plants and have no way of knowing what is catching a ride on them.

Lastly, keep the humidity inside below 90% even if it does increase your fuel bill or mean a bit more frequent waterings.  Many disease organisms need free moisture to grow in.   So, if there is water dripping from the roof and plants in the morning there isn’t enough ventilation and steps should be taken to increase this.

With a planning and a little luck and lots of TLC you will be able to avoid both disease and insects in your geodesic dome greenhouse for quite a long time.  Thus insuring a bountiful harvest for you and your family.
